The effects of mercury on permeability of the pig red cells to potassium

Abstract
The effects of mercury on permeability of the pig red cells to potassium were studied by analyzing dose response curve, binding of mercury by red cell and recovery of cell membrane. In a parallel study, lead was also tested. The following results were obtained.
1. Mercury chloride caused a prehemolytic loss of potassium from pig red cells at concentration ranging between 6 x 10-8mM and 1 x 10-1mM. Potassium loss progressed rapidly for about 60 minutes, however, slowed down thereafter. At concentrations above I x 10-1 mM hemolysis began to appear.
2. Mercury caused the loss of potassium from the pig red cells by reacting with sulfhydryl group of cell membrane.
3. Although the time elapsed as long as 5 hours after mercury poisoning on pig red cells, a recovery of cell membrane was not observed.
4. pH influenced potassium loss from the mercury poisoned pig red cells. At the pH value of 6.8 the permeability was greatest.
5. Lead ion did not produced potassium leakage from the pig red cells.
